What this actually is

The programme

Barberyn Reef prices every stay as a daily full-board room rate plus a mandatory daily Ayurveda treatment charge. Its FAQ gives a minimum stay of one week and recommends at least two, preferably three; prices here are for 21 nights. By the property’s account, two weeks include the purification process and introduce rejuvenation, and a three-week stay continues the rejuvenation.

Treatment begins with a one-to-one consultation with the resort’s Ayurveda doctors, who draw up a personalised plan. The property describes daily head, face and synchronised body oil treatment, a herbal or herbal steam bath, herbal decoctions and elixirs, acupuncture and guidance on what to eat and avoid. It says its medicine is made of herbs and natural ingredients, much of it made by Barberyn.

On the beachfront at Beruwala on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, the resort opened in 1968 and, by the property’s account, pioneered Ayurveda tourism in 1984. The property says it has 75 rooms, few air-conditioned, and recommends natural ventilation during treatment. It states that it serves no meat or alcohol; its FAQ calls the food plant-based, but its general food page describes fish, so check.

Is this your kind of stay?

Who it may suit, and when to consider another option

Use both columns as travel-planning guidance. Final medical suitability must be discussed with your own doctor and the qualified team at the property.

Consider this if

  • Guests who can stay two to three weeks — the property recommends a minimum of two, preferably three
  • Guests with no medical problem — the property says Ayurveda has a preventive as well as a curative aspect
  • Stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, obesity, sub-fertility, joint pain — on the property’s list
  • Guests with burnout or sleep disorders, which the property’s FAQ names among illnesses its resorts treat
  • Guests with sciatica who can stay longer — the property says a cure takes about four weeks of treatment

Consider another option if

  • Anyone travelling with a companion who does not want treatment — the property makes Ayurveda treatment mandatory for all guests all stay
  • Anyone wanting meat or alcohol — the property states it serves neither
  • Anyone who cannot stay a week — the property states the minimum stay is one week

The shape of it

Day by day

The structure of the programme as the property describes it — a shape, not a timetable.

Purification (Shodana)

Set by the physicians to the length of stay

The property describes purification as ideally done in three stages, needing a minimum of two to three weeks in all. For guests unable to stay two weeks or more, it says the doctors plan the most important purification therapies according to the needs of the body and the length of stay.

  • Purva Karma — preparation: oleation and fomentation
  • Pradhana Karma — Vamana, Virechana, Vasti, Nasyam and Rakta Mokshana
  • Given as per individual requirement, the property says
  • It says Vamana, Virechana and Vasti are the physician’s decision
  • Paschat Karma — the post-purification regime

Pacifying or rejuvenating treatment

After purification

The property states that the post-purification regime is followed by Shamana (pacifying) or Rasayana (rejuvenating) treatment, and describes Shamana as pacifying therapies for manifested diseases.

  • Herbs, minerals and other biological products, singly or in compounds

Who looks after you

Supervision, by qualification and number

Clinical and practitioner teams are described by role and qualification rather than by individual name, because staffing changes. The property will confirm the current team and explain how practitioners are assigned before or on arrival.

Clinical supervision
Ayurveda physicians. The property states that each of its resorts has a team of resident doctors, and that the hospital running Barberyn Reef is certified by the Sri Lanka Department of Ayurveda as a private Ayurvedic services institution.
The team around you
Ayurveda physicians and therapists. The property says two therapists give the daily synchronised body oil massage, an Ayurvedic doctor or dietician is at hand at meals, and its teachers lead yoga.
Consultations
An initial one-to-one consultation with a physician, who draws up the treatment plan, and subsequent consultations.

Questions

Before you ask

What is the minimum stay?
One week, according to the property. It recommends a minimum of two weeks and preferably three: two weeks include the purification process and an introduction to rejuvenation, three weeks continue the rejuvenation, and one week gives an introduction to Ayurveda.
What does the day involve for a beginner?
The property says guests start with a consultation with its Ayurveda doctors, who draw up a personalised plan: daily head, face and synchronised body oil treatment with two therapists, a herbal or steam bath, herbal decoctions, elixirs and acupuncture. Yoga, spiritual activities and, on some days, short excursions are part of it.
Can I come with no medical problem?
Yes, according to the property — Ayurveda has a preventive and a curative aspect, and treatment can be taken to maintain and enhance health through purification and rejuvenation.
What if I have a specific medical condition?
The property asks guests to write to its reservations team, who liaise with the medical team, before completing the booking. It says the conditions it lists may be treated with varying degrees of success, and that what works for one person may not work for another.
Are there doctors at the resort?
Yes — the property states that each of its resorts has a team of resident doctors.
What food is served?
The property serves no meat or alcohol and cooks according to Ayurvedic principles. Its FAQ says Barberyn Reef’s food is entirely plant-based; its group-wide food page describes fish at lunch and a fish option at dinner, so confirm with the resort. Breakfast and lunch are buffets; the doctors advise what to eat and avoid.
Can I come with a group?
Yes, according to the property, which takes group bookings and asks groups planning a retreat to write to it. All guests take Ayurveda treatment for the duration of their stay.
Are airport transfers included?
Yes. The property arranges transfers from the airport to the resort and back as a free service for resident guests, and asks to be told flight details.
Can I go sightseeing during the stay?
The property arranges scheduled excursions to places a short distance from the resort free of charge. Other excursions can be arranged at extra charge, provided they do not disturb the Ayurveda treatment.
How is a booking confirmed?
The property’s English terms require a 40% advance payment to confirm the booking, with the balance paid on arrival at the latest. Check-in is at 13.00 and check-out at 12.00 noon.
