The short version

Who this house is for

Anybody in Baden-Baden for any reason. It is not a hotel and there is nothing to book beyond a ticket — a nineteenth-century Roman-Irish bath house where you move through a fixed sequence of rooms over about three hours, without a swimming costume. Mark Twain’s line about forgetting time here is on the wall for a reason.

The signature

The Roman-Irish circuit, textile-free, taken once and remembered permanently.

These photographs show Baden-Baden and the disciplines practised at this house. They are not photographs of the property — we would rather show you the place honestly than dress a stock picture up as a room you have not been sold.

What it is known for

Why this house has the reputation it has

  1. Opened on 15 December 1877, and the surviving template every Roman-Irish bath in the world copies.
  2. The circuit is a protocol, not a facility: a set order of hot air, steam, brush massage, immersion and cooling — commonly given as seventeen stations — taking about three hours.
  3. Fed by the town’s twelve thermal springs, which rise from around 2,000 m at 56–68 °C.
  4. It is municipal and open to anybody, which is why it is still a working bath rather than a hotel amenity.

What we would tell you on the phone

Textile-free and largely mixed-gender, with limited single-sex days — check the schedule before you go, because a lot of visitors turn round at the door. It is also a bath, not a treatment: nothing here is prescribed and nobody examines you.

We do not sell a programme at this house. It is profiled here because people ask about it. If it is the one you want, book with the property directly — or tell us what you are trying to achieve and we will suggest a house we do work with.

Wellness at Friedrichsbad

Who is actually here

Bath attendants for the brush-massage stage, and no clinical staff. This is a bathing culture rather than a therapy and we list it as one.

We do not publish clinicians' names anywhere on this site. They move, which makes a named page quietly untrue, and naming one invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift — assignment is made on arrival, from your examination. What is worth knowing is how many there are and what they hold.

What the building contains

  • A seventeen-stage Roman-Irish bathing circuit
  • Thermal water from the Baden-Baden springs
  • The domed central pool under the 1877 cupola
  • Brush massage as part of the sequence
  • Textile-free throughout, with some mixed and some separated days

At the table

Eating here

On a prescribed programme the food is part of the treatment rather than a choice — which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a wine list.

  • No restaurant

There is a tea room for the resting stage. Eat before, lightly, or afterwards.

Between treatments

How the days go

What there is to do here when you are not being treated, on site and within reach of it.

  • The bathing circuit itself, which takes about three hours
  • The Caracalla Therme next door, which is textile and modern

We cannot book this one. It is profiled because the destination is not complete without it and because people ask us about it — but we have no arrangement here, so book with the property directly rather than through us. We would rather say that than take an enquiry we cannot fulfil. Researched independently. Friedrichsbad has not reviewed or endorsed this page.
