The short version

Who this house is for

Somebody who wants a hospital that happens to be a palace, and who will not mind being told no. There is no alcohol, no meat, no leather and no mobile phone in the public rooms, and nothing shorter than a fortnight is sold. Guests who understood that before arriving tend to describe it as the best thing they have done.

The signature

Classical Panchakarma from fourteen days onwards, with a strictly vegetarian, individually-prescribed diet and no à la carte anything.

Kerala, and what is practised here

    Ayurveda, practised at this house

These photographs show Kerala and the disciplines practised at this house. They are not photographs of the property — we would rather show you the place honestly than dress a stock picture up as a room you have not been sold.

What it is known for

Why this house has the reputation it has

  1. NABH accreditation — the Indian national hospital accreditation board — is a clinical standard rather than a tourism one, and very few Ayurvedic properties hold it.
  2. It refuses short stays outright: programmes run from fourteen days onwards, which is the clearest possible signal that the programme is the product and the palace is the setting.
  3. Run by CGH Earth, a group with a long record in Kerala and a house style of understatement — no alcohol, no meat, no mobile phones in public areas.
  4. The building is a genuine 200-year-old palace of the Vengunad chieftains, restored rather than themed — nineteen guest rooms and a twelve-room clinic.

What we would tell you on the phone

This is close to a monastic experience. No alcohol, no meat, no coffee, no phones in the public rooms, and a fortnight is the shortest stay you can buy. Guests who wanted a palace hotel with treatments are unhappy within a day; guests who wanted the treatment tend to come back.

Your accommodation

The rooms, and which one to ask for

  • 01

    Palace room

Nineteen rooms in the restored two-hundred-year-old Vengunad palace. High ceilings, dark timber, no television. Category names vary by wing; all are quoted within the programme.

  • 02

    Suite

A handful of larger rooms in the older part of the building, with a sitting room.

Categories and names are as published by the property and are confirmed in writing at the quote. Where we would take a different room from the one the programme is quoted in, the note says so.

Who is actually here

NABH-accredited, which is the Indian national hospital accreditation standard rather than a tourism grade — very few Ayurvedic properties hold it. Resident physicians, an in-house pharmacy, and nineteen rooms against twelve treatment rooms, which is a ratio no resort can match.

We do not publish clinicians' names anywhere on this site. They move, which makes a named page quietly untrue, and naming one invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift — assignment is made on arrival, from your examination. What is worth knowing is how many there are and what they hold.

What the building contains

  • Twelve treatment rooms against nineteen guest rooms
  • In-house pharmacy
  • NABH hospital accreditation
  • Yoga hall in the old durbar room
  • Temple and meditation courtyard
  • Library
  • No alcohol, no meat, no leather on the estate

At the table

Eating here

On a prescribed programme the food is part of the treatment rather than a choice — which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a wine list.

  • The palace dining room

One kitchen, no menu, and a plate written by your physician each day. Sattvic vegetarian throughout, and it changes as the programme changes.

Between treatments

How the days go

What there is to do here when you are not being treated, on site and within reach of it.

  • Yoga and meditation
  • Temple visits
  • Talks on Ayurvedic philosophy
  • Kalaripayattu demonstrations
  • Nothing else, on purpose
