Wellness retreats from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman

Oman is Kerala’s third-largest source of foreign visitors, ahead of Germany and France, and Kerala is a direct flight from all three countries. Qatar and Kuwait look west as well: after Saudi Arabia and the UAE, they send the most Gulf visitors to Switzerland.

The bit that decides it

When you can travel, and whether that is the right season

The Gulf summer school holidays fall in Kerala’s monsoon, the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment — the season Kerala Tourism has promoted to Gulf travellers, with roadshows in Muscat among other Gulf cities. The same weeks are the Alpine summer, when the Tyrol and Bad Gastein are cool and at their best. Ramadan is a quiet month for travel; the Eid holidays are the peak, so book those weeks early.

Worth knowing. Kerala is close enough that a short stay is tempting, but a Panchakarma still needs a fortnight however near the airport is. With less time, choose a gentler programme and come back for the full course in the monsoon.

Getting there

The shape of the journey from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman

  • Kerala

Direct, and frequent — Kerala has the densest Gulf connection of any Indian state.

  • Sri Lanka

Direct from Doha several times a day; from Kuwait and Muscat, direct or one stop through another Gulf hub.

  • Rishikesh and Bhutan

Through Delhi. There is no international service into Dehradun, so Rishikesh is a flight to Delhi and the short domestic hop; Bhutan is a flight on one of the Bhutanese carriers from Delhi to Paro.

  • The European cure towns

Doha is direct to Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Geneva, Paris and Prague, then a train or a short drive to the cure town. From Kuwait and Muscat, fly direct where there is a service or connect through Doha or Dubai.

  • Bali, Koh Samui and Japan

A longer journey east. Bali and Koh Samui commonly connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok; Japan through Tokyo or Seoul — into Fukuoka for Beppu, or on to Naha for Okinawa.

Routes describe the shape of the journey, not a timetable. Carriers and connections change every season, so we confirm the actual routing in writing with your quote.

Questions

Planning from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, answered

When is the best time for Ayurveda in Kerala from Doha, Kuwait or Muscat?
For treatment, June to September — the monsoon is the classical Ayurveda season, and Karkidakam, the traditional month for a full rejuvenation course, runs from mid-July to mid-August. If you would rather have dry weather, October to February works well. Avoid March to May, when the heat and humidity make daily oil therapy hard work. The monsoon months line up with the Gulf summer school holidays.
Which wellness retreats are easiest to reach from Doha?
Kerala and Sri Lanka are direct and frequent, four to five hours in the air. Doha is also direct to Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Geneva, Paris and Prague, so every European cure town on this map is one flight and a train or a short drive away.
Where can I escape the summer heat for a wellness retreat?
The Alps. The Tyrol clinics above Innsbruck and the thermal cure at Bad Gastein are at their best in July and August, with daytime highs in the low-to-mid twenties, and Baden-Baden is good all summer. Montreux is best in June or late August, because the town is full for the Jazz Festival in July.
Is it worth booking a retreat over Eid?
You can, but the Eid holidays are the busiest travel weeks of the Gulf year, so book flights and rooms as early as possible. Eid moves about eleven days earlier each year, so check where it falls against the destination’s season — the same Eid can land in Kerala’s monsoon one year and in its hot pre-monsoon months a few years later.
