How long
Fourteen nights for a Mayr cure — it is the length the method is written around. Ten if you genuinely cannot, and the physicians will tell you what that costs you.

What we are treating

Something has been wrong with my stomach for years and nobody can tell me what.

The concern where the Central European tradition is strongest, and where the diagnostic work is the product.

Modern Mayr medicine is built on a specific and testable idea: that a large amount of general unwellness is digestive in origin, and that resting, cleansing and retraining the digestive tract changes it. The clinical practice involves a physician’s abdominal examination, laboratory work, a staged diet reduced to something very plain, and manual abdominal treatment — and it is genuinely medical rather than a spa package with a juice attached.

The Ayurvedic answer arrives at similar territory by another road. Agni — digestive fire — is the organising concept, and a Panchakarma is in large part a digestive intervention: oil, a narrowing diet, a removal, then a slow structured re-feeding in a specific order that matters more than guests expect.

The honest position on both is that they help a great many people with functional complaints and neither is a diagnosis. If nobody has yet excluded coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or anything structural, that work belongs at home and belongs first.

What actually helps

  • mayrPhysician-led, with diagnostics and laboratory work on site, a staged prescribed diet, and manual abdominal treatment. The most rigorous option in this atlas for a digestive complaint.
  • ayurvedaA full Panchakarma is substantially a digestive intervention, and the samsarjana krama re-feeding at the end is the part that consolidates it.
  • balneotherapyThe Karlovy Vary drinking cure is prescribed for digestive and metabolic indications and has been for four centuries; taken properly it is a doctor-led course, not a stroll along a colonnade with a cup.

What a programme actually does

  • A physician’s abdominal examination on arrival, and laboratory work at both ends if you are at a Mayr house.
  • A diet that gets much plainer and much smaller before it gets more interesting. You will be hungry.
  • Chewing at length, taught as a technique. It sounds ridiculous and it is central to the method.
  • Manual abdominal treatment most days.
  • A written protocol for the weeks after, because the re-feeding is where this is won or lost.

Karlovy Vary. The cure is a walking cure — colonnade to colonnade, six to eight glasses a day — so it wants dry, mild weather. May, June, September and October are the window. Avoid early July for the film festival, and November to February for a cold valley and a walk that becomes an endurance test.

What we would tell you on the phone. Get a diagnosis first. Unexplained weight loss, blood, a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, or pain that wakes you at night are all reasons to see a doctor at home before you book anything. A fasting cure is not appropriate in pregnancy, with a history of an eating disorder, with type 1 diabetes, or on several common medications without adjustment — declare everything and let the house’s physicians decide.

Asked and answered

Questions we actually get

Does drinking mineral water actually treat anything?
For specific digestive, metabolic and hepatobiliary complaints, in specified concentrations, there is a real if modest literature — and Czech medicine treats it as a therapy with indications and contraindications rather than a general tonic. It is not a cure for anything, and any property that says otherwise should be avoided.
Fourteen nights or twenty-eight?
The tradition says twenty-one to twenty-eight and the physicians here will say the same. We will sell fourteen if that is what you have, and we will also tell you that you are taking the short version of a long protocol.

Not sure this is the right list?

Tell us what is actually wrong and we will shortlist three houses — or tell you that Czechia is the wrong answer, which happens about one enquiry in six.
