What this actually is

The programme

Shamana rather than purification — the palliative line of Ayurveda, which uses diet, herbs and routine and leaves the purgation out entirely. It is the programme we sell most of, and the right first Ayurvedic experience for the great majority of people.

Shirodhara most evenings, dinner finished by seven, lamps down at nine, and a serious conversation on day eight about what happens when you go home and the phone comes back. That last part decides whether any of it lasts.

Intensity: Gentle — nothing dramatic. Every programme here carries this line, because "restorative" and "demanding" are sold with the same photographs.

Read this part twice

Who this is for, and who it is wrong for

Read the right-hand column as carefully as the left. It is the half that decides whether this is a good fortnight or a wasted one, and it is published before the price for that reason.

Book this if

  • Difficulty falling asleep, or waking at three and not returning
  • A first Ayurvedic programme
  • Anyone with ten nights rather than twenty-one
  • People who talk or decide for a living and cannot stop doing it at night

Do not book this if

  • Diagnosed sleep apnoea — that needs investigating properly at home first
  • Anyone hoping to come off prescribed sleep medication during the stay. That is your own doctor’s decision and takes longer than ten nights

The shape of it

Day by day

Days shift according to how you respond — that is the point of a daily review. This is the structure, not a timetable.

Re-anchoring the clock

Days 1–3

Fixed meal and lamp times from the first evening, an early light dinner, and no screens after eight. Most guests sleep badly for two nights and then unusually well.

  • Fixed timings from day one
  • Early light dinner
  • Screens surrendered at eight, if you ask us to

Treatment

Days 4–8

Shirodhara most evenings, abhyanga daily, herbs chosen for your constitution, and yoga nidra rather than asana in the afternoon.

  • Shirodhara, prescribed not chosen
  • Daily abhyanga
  • Yoga nidra

Taking it home

Days 9–10

A written evening routine built around your actual household, and an honest conversation about which parts of it will survive.

  • Written protocol
  • Six-week follow-up call

A day, hour by hour

What a Tuesday actually looks like

Roughly three hours are fixed. The evenings are the programme; the days are yours.

  1. Wake and warm waterLater than the purification programmes — the point here is regularity, not austerity.
  2. Gentle practice and pranayamaForty minutes, weighted towards long exhalations.
  3. BreakfastWarm, cooked, and at the same hour every day.
  4. AbhyangaAn hour of warm-oil massage, then rest.
  5. Lunch — the main meal
  6. FreeWalk, read, swim. Nothing scheduled.
  7. ShirodharaThe warm-oil thread on the forehead, most evenings, prescribed rather than chosen.
  8. Dinner, finished by sevenThe single most important item on this list.
  9. Lamps downScreens surrendered at eight if you have asked us to hold you to it.

Where you stay

Somatheeram Ayurveda Village

The property describes itself as the world’s first Ayurveda hospital run in a resort setting — a claim we attribute rather than assert, since Barberyn in Sri Lanka makes a parallel one — and it is unquestionably among the earliest.

Forty years of operation means forty years of building, and the estate is larger and busier than the boutique houses inland. If you want twelve guests and silence, Palakkad will suit you better; if you want the institution that invented this, it is here.

Who looks after you

Supervision, by qualification and number

You will not find a physician's name on this site. Staff move, and a page that names one is a page that quietly goes out of date — worse, it invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift. Assignment is made on arrival, from your examination, at every serious property here.

Clinical supervision
A resident BAMS physician examines you on arrival and reviews you daily.
The team around you
A dedicated therapist pair for the stay. Shirodhara is a two-person treatment done properly and a one-person treatment done badly.
Consultations
Daily, with arrival and departure examinations and a six-week video follow-up.
Your consultation is with our clinical desk, not a salesperson. The free call before you book is about whether this programme is right for you at all — and often enough it ends with a recommendation to go shorter, later, or somewhere we do not sell.

Counted, so you can compare

What is actually in it

Most of this industry publishes inclusions as a bulleted list, which cannot be compared between two programmes at two prices. These can.

  • 20+hours of therapy

Shirodhara and abhyanga daily, timed to the evening rather than the morning, because that is the point.

  • 10physician consultations

Daily review of sleep, digestion and mood, with the prescription adjusted each morning.

  • 6weeks of preparations

To take home, with a written night routine that matters more than the medicines.

  • 1follow-up at six weeks

    Included, by video.

The money

Prices, by season and occupancy

Both occupancies in every band, before you enquire rather than after. Sole occupancy is not half a double and never has been — publishing only the sharing rate quotes the minority of this market and surprises the rest.

Long enough for the nervous system to change register and short enough to take out of one year's leave.

Prices per person by season and occupancy
SeasonSharingSingle
Low seasonJune to SeptemberUS$1,530US$1,840
ShoulderOctober, November, April and MayUS$1,740US$2,080
High seasonDecember to MarchUS$2,010US$2,430
  • Low season. The monsoon — and in Kerala the monsoon is the treatment season. Humidity keeps the channels receptive to oil, the air is cool, and the houses are empty. The cheapest months are also the most effective ones, which almost never happens.
  • Shoulder. Post-monsoon October and November are excellent and busier. April and May are hot enough that we would steer you elsewhere in the year unless the dates are fixed.
  • High season. Dry, bright, and what the brochures photograph. It is a perfectly good fortnight and it is a less effective one, at about a quarter more.

What the price is. Per person for ten nights, including the room, prescribed meals, all therapies, medicines during the stay, six weeks of preparations to take home and return airport transfers. Flights quoted separately.

Illustrative, and held for seven days once we have quoted you in writing. Nothing on this site costs more for booking it through us.

Questions

The ones we are actually asked

Is shirodhara really doing anything?
The evidence is modest and mostly on anxiety measures rather than sleep architecture. What the programme actually rests on is the timing — the fixed early dinner, the dark evenings and the routine. We would rather tell you that than sell you the oil.
