What this actually is

The programme

Fourteen nights is the shortest stay the house sells, which tells you everything about how it regards the programme. Classical Panchakarma under NABH accreditation — an Indian hospital standard rather than a tourism one — in an early-twentieth-century Vengunad palace restored rather than themed.

No alcohol, no meat, no coffee, no phones in the public rooms, and a strictly vegetarian diet prescribed individually. Guests who arrive expecting a palace hotel with treatments attached are unhappy within a day. Guests who arrive for the treatment tend to come back.

Intensity: Demanding — genuinely hard days. Every programme here carries this line, because "restorative" and "demanding" are sold with the same photographs.

Read this part twice

Who this is for, and who it is wrong for

Read the right-hand column as carefully as the left. It is the half that decides whether this is a good fortnight or a wasted one, and it is published before the price for that reason.

Book this if

  • You want the most clinically accredited Ayurveda available in India
  • You can accept a genuinely austere fortnight — no alcohol, no meat, no phones in public
  • A second or later Ayurvedic programme, where you know how you respond
  • You would rather have ten guests than a hundred

Do not book this if

  • A first Ayurvedic experience — the ten-night shamana programme at Chowara is the right start
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Anyone travelling with a non-treating companion; there is nothing here for them

The shape of it

Day by day

Days shift according to how you respond — that is the point of a daily review. This is the structure, not a timetable.

Examination and preparation

Days 1–6

Full examination and pathology on arrival, then internal and external oleation with a narrowing diet. Nothing is decided in advance of the physician seeing you.

  • NABH-standard clinical intake
  • Snehana and swedana daily
  • Individually prescribed vegetarian diet

Purification

Days 7–9

Virechana on a single supervised day, with basti where indicated on either side, and hourly observation.

  • One supervised purgation day
  • Basti series where indicated
  • Two days cleared afterwards

Rebuild

Days 10–14

Structured re-feeding, rasayana preparations, and a written protocol for the three months that follow.

  • Samsarjana krama re-feeding
  • Rasayana preparations
  • Closing examination and protocol

A day, hour by hour

What a Tuesday actually looks like

Six hours are fixed and the rest is silence. There is no alternative menu and no à la carte anything.

  1. Wake with the bell
  2. Yoga and chantingIn the palace courtyard, before the heat.
  3. Physician's roundPulse and tongue, then the day's prescription written.
  4. BreakfastPrescribed individually. Whatever arrives is what you eat.
  5. Therapy blockTwo to three hours with the same therapist pair for the whole fortnight.
  6. Lunch
  7. Rest — enforcedGuests are asked to stay in their rooms. It is not a suggestion.
  8. Second therapy or steam
  9. Evening prayer, then dinnerFinished before seven; the palace goes quiet at nine.

Where you stay

Kalari Kovilakom

This is close to a monastic experience. No alcohol, no meat, no coffee, no phones in the public rooms, and a fortnight is the shortest stay you can buy. Guests who wanted a palace hotel with treatments are unhappy within a day; guests who wanted the treatment tend to come back.

Who looks after you

Supervision, by qualification and number

You will not find a physician's name on this site. Staff move, and a page that names one is a page that quietly goes out of date — worse, it invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift. Assignment is made on arrival, from your examination, at every serious property here.

Clinical supervision
Resident physicians in a NABH-accredited Ayurvedic hospital — a clinical accreditation rather than a tourism classification, and very few properties in this field hold one.
The team around you
Therapists assigned per guest across twelve treatment rooms. Nineteen bedrooms in total, so the house is never running at a ratio that thins the supervision.
Consultations
Daily physician review, with arrival and departure examinations and a written protocol to take home.
Your consultation is with our clinical desk, not a salesperson. The free call before you book is about whether this programme is right for you at all — and often enough it ends with a recommendation to go shorter, later, or somewhere we do not sell.

Counted, so you can compare

What is actually in it

Most of this industry publishes inclusions as a bulleted list, which cannot be compared between two programmes at two prices. These can.

  • 34+hours of therapy

In twelve treatment rooms serving nineteen guest rooms — a ratio no resort in this atlas can match.

  • 14physician consultations

Daily, in a NABH-accredited facility. That is the Indian national hospital accreditation standard, not a tourism grade.

  • 12treatment rooms

Against nineteen bedrooms. You are never waiting for a slot.

  • 0things to buy on site

No alcohol, no meat, no leather, no phones in the public rooms, and no menu. The invoice is the invoice.

The money

Prices, by season and occupancy

Both occupancies in every band, before you enquire rather than after. Sole occupancy is not half a double and never has been — publishing only the sharing rate quotes the minority of this market and surprises the rest.

Kalari Kovilakom will not take a booking shorter than this, and the refusal is the clearest signal in the atlas that the programme is the product.

Prices per person by season and occupancy
SeasonSharingSingle
Low seasonJune to SeptemberUS$3,010US$3,620
ShoulderOctober, November, April and MayUS$3,410US$4,100
High seasonDecember to MarchUS$3,960US$4,780
  • Low season. The monsoon — and in Kerala the monsoon is the treatment season. Humidity keeps the channels receptive to oil, the air is cool, and the houses are empty. The cheapest months are also the most effective ones, which almost never happens.
  • Shoulder. Post-monsoon October and November are excellent and busier. April and May are hot enough that we would steer you elsewhere in the year unless the dates are fixed.
  • High season. Dry, bright, and what the brochures photograph. It is a perfectly good fortnight and it is a less effective one, at about a quarter more.

What the price is. Per person for fourteen nights in the palace, including all prescribed meals, every therapy, all medicines during the stay, preparations to take home and return airport transfers. There is nothing to pay on site — the house has no bar, no menu and no spa list. Flights quoted separately.

Illustrative, and held for seven days once we have quoted you in writing. Nothing on this site costs more for booking it through us.

Questions

The ones we are actually asked

What does NABH accreditation actually mean?
It is the Indian national hospital accreditation standard — the same board that accredits conventional hospitals — covering clinical protocols, records, infection control and patient safety. Very few Ayurvedic properties hold it, and it is a materially stronger signal than any tourism classification.
